Dear Friends,
The battle has just begun. While we are in the early stages of learning about the challenges facing Chris, the Ishida Family would like you to know how very grateful they are for all of your calls, emails, prayers and offers to help in any way. Additionally, they would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while they try to give Chris's situation their full attention at this time. During this past week, several ways of communicating with the family were set up (see links below).
Chris Ishida was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a condition that occurs when bone marrow produces an insufficient amount of new blood cells. This rare and serious condition leaves the patient feeling fatigued and at a higher risk of infection and bleeding. The cure for Chris's disease is a bone marrow transplant from a live donor who matches his genetic make-up. While an international search has already been initiated, Chris needs your help immediately to increase his odds of receiving this life-saving transplant.
Unfortunately, Chris was not a marrow match with his sister, Sachi. His search in the volunteer donor pool is more complex as he is bi-racial. While genetic matches can be made from different races, Chris's chances for a successful match will most likely come from an 18-30 year-old male who is of mixed Caucasian and Japanese race.
Please take action NOW by registering to become a donor with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP or aka "Be The Match Registry"). Part of registering involves you taking a simple cheek swab. The tissue cells from this swab are then typed for use in determining a match and become part of this critical live-donor registry. In the event that you are matched to someone who needs this life-saving procedure, please be aware that, due to improvements in marrow transplant technology, the majority of donations now performed are non-surgical.

The Be The Match Registry cannot accept registrations for a single patient. When someone joins the Be The Match Registry, they are making a commitment to consider donating to any person in need of a transplant who they are matched to. You may not be the match for Chris, but you may be the match to save another life. As a volunteer, registrants are never under any legal obligation to donate and their decision is always respected. However, because a late decision not to donate can be life-threatening to a patient, they ask that registrants think seriously about this commitment before deciding to join the registry.
